Like everything that is constantly in use, your Apple laptop screen needs a little cleaning every once in awhile to stay in pristine shape. However, compared to other everyday items, your laptop screen is made up of materials that can be easily and permanently damaged if handled the wrong way. It’s imperative to take extra precaution when cleaning it. If you’re not sure how to clean your screen, here are some tips on what you should and you shouldn’t do.

Do shut your computer down before you clean your screen.
Liquids and electronic components do not react to each other well, so if you are going to use water to clean your screen, make sure that you shut your computer down and unplug it from the power source to avoid possible electric shocks. The amount of water you will use is pretty minimal and the chance of that happening is low, but taking extra precautions is always a good idea.
Do use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean your laptop screen.
Accumulated dust is one of the main reasons for dirty computer screens and one of the easiest types of dirt to clean. Just get a piece of cloth, wipe it back and forth across your screen until no more dust remains and you’re done. Just make sure that you use the right type of cloth when you clean your screen.
No, you don’t need any expensive or highly-specialized cloths to clean your MacBook screen, but you do need to make sure that the cloth is soft and lint-free.
Lint can cause electric charge to build up in the cloth and this may react with the electrical components of your laptop. Using a lint-free cloth should take care of this problem.
Using a cloth with a rough surface is also a no-no. A lot of modern computer screens are made up of thin materials that can be damaged by unnecessary force or friction. This applies not only to cloth, but with other commonly used cleaning materials that have similarly rough surfaces like newspaper or paper towels.
If you have a microfiber cloth around your house, they are typically more recommended when cleaning computer screens compared to regular cloth because the compactness of the fibers makes it easier and faster to remove dust off the screen surface.
Don’t spray water directly on your laptop screen.
Using water to clean your Mac is generally safe, but never apply it directly on your screen. This not only has the potential of damaging the electrical components, but excess water may drip and trickle down into crisitcal components.
If you need to use water to get rid of stubborn dirt, get a spray bottle, fill it with water, and spray a little amount just enough to dampen a cloth. Be careful not to use too much pressure when wiping the dirt away because you may end up damaging the screen.
Also, if possible, try to use distilled water instead of tap water. At best, contaminated tap water can leave dirty streaks on your screen when applied on the surface. At worst, they can contain chemicals that may react badly with your screen’s electronic components. This is not an absolute rule (you are free to use tap water if there is no other option available), but there’s no harm in using distilled water if there is already plenty of it around.
Don’t use window cleaners to clean your laptop screen.
Unless your user manual specifically recommends a certain type of cleaner for your MacBook screen, you should never use window cleaners, bleach, and other types of products that contain chemical solutions (including rubbing alcohol and baby wipes). These contain harsh chemicals that can damage your computer screen.
Depending on how harsh the chemicals in the solution are, they can either damage the protective coating on your Apple laptops screen surface or the screen itself which can severely affect the display. Replacing the screen can be quite expensive, so you wouldn’t want to do anything that can damage it as much as possible.
As you can see, cleaning your laptop screen is pretty easy and straightforward. If you can keep your computer away from places where dust and dirt regularly gather (floors, pets, smokers, etc.) cleaning your MacBook screen at least once a week should be enough. If not, you might want to wipe it a bit at least once a day to keep dust and dirt from building up.
