Ask Max: My mac mini shuts down every time it goes to sleep

Asked on 10/02/2014:

If I walk away from my Mac for too long my mini shuts down losing my place. What setting is lousing this up?

The Energy Saving setting in the System Preferences has been at 15 minutes for both the computer and the screen side. I bought the mini in 2011.

Thanks for the help!

Powering completely down during sleep is a normal setting within energy saver. It could be that the SMC controller needs to be reset, that would be my first recommendation. Should the issue persist, it may require some time on the workbench for diagnostics. The SMC reset has resolved this in almost every occasion with which I’ve used it.

To reset the SMC:

  1. Shut down machine completely

  2. Unplug it from the power source

  3. Wait 15 seconds

  4. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds

  5. Plug it back in and turn it on
