Ask Max: External Display Issues

Asked on 02/05/2014:

I am having issues with my MacBook Pro not sending a data to my external monitor from the mini display port to DVI. When it is plugged into the monitor, the monitor doesn't read that there is anything connected. It will send data through an HDMI cable, but the picture quality is really awful (looks over-sharpened and color is off).

If you have the Mini Displayport to DVI adapter and DVI display connected, then proceed into the System Profiler (Applications > System Information). Check under “Graphics and Displays” and expand all the disclosure triangles.

Ensure that it shows both the adapter and the external display listed there. If it doesn't, this will require further information and troubleshooting to pinpoint the problem.
