Save with a quality used MacBook

The 13" MacBook was introduced to replace the iBook and 12" PowerBook models. If you're using OS X exclusively, a certified pre-owned MacBook (also known as a used MacBook or reseller refurbished MacBook elsewhere) is a good way to go. If you still need OS 9 (or prefer a built-in modem), then the iBooks and PowerBooks are worthy machines.

Since chip makers are having a difficult time increasing the speed of their chips, they are building additional "cores" into them, allowing for greater speed. These used MacBooks come with two cores, with the difference between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo being a larger L2 cache and other technologies that enhance the speed (not something that you'll notice in most applications a great deal, however). Otherwise, the models are all very similar, with similar battery life, networking (with some slight upgradeability on the later models), Magsafe power connectors, glossy screens, scrolling trackpads, and integrated iSight video cameras.

They are also available in either black or white; Apple charges a premium for the black screen on new models that is largely eliminated on pre-owned MacBook prices.

Streamlined to go.

A mere 1.08 inches thin and weighing only 5.0 pounds,* MacBook cuts a slim profile on any desk (or in any backpack or briefcase). Since MacBook is sure to become your constant companion, a durable polycarbonate shell keeps it ready for the rough and tumble of everyday life.

And because the latch is magnetic... with no moving parts to snag, jam, or break... even opening and closing MacBook is a pleasure.

The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.

Making connections.

Sometimes your work needs room. So extend your MacBook desktop by connecting a 20-inch Apple Cinema Display, or connect a projector to put it on the big screen. But why stop the add-ons there?

MacBook also includes two USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 400 port, Gigabit Ethernet, audio input and headphone jacks, and a convenient lock slot.

Power play.

The MagSafe Power Adapter has just that: a magnetic connection instead of a physical one. So tripping over a power cord won't send your shiny new MacBook flying off a table or desk.

The cord simply breaks cleanly away, without damage to either the cord or the system.

Two-finger scroll.

With two-finger scrolling, the trackpad becomes a fast track to wherever you want to go. And if you come from a right-click world, it's easy to make the MacBook fit in your comfort zone.

Lights, MacBook, action.

Cleverly integrated above the MacBook display is an iSight camera. Use it with iChat, and you can be there without being there. Video chat with a buddy, share a photo slideshow with Mom, or run through a presentation with a colleague.

Since you're close-up ready, use iSight with Photo Booth for fun photo effects. Or star in your own indie flick with iMovie. Like everything Mac, iSight just works. No need to waste valuable primping time installing software or configuring the camera. Just smile.
