The Mac Pro was Apple's first Intel-based tower, and is exactly the same physical size as the Power Mac G5, although the the Mac Pro is an air-cooled system while the Power Mac G5 Quad was a liquid-cooled system. The Mac Pro may be the most customized Mac on the planet; with multiple options of processors, up to four hard drives and plenty of video card slots, many of our Mac Pro offerings are fairly unique.
This used Mac Pro is a 64-bit workstation, but it is fully compatible with existing 32-bit applications. This allows you to run the new generation of 64-bit applications that address massive amounts of memory, without compromising the performance of existing 32-bit applications. Note, however, that if you're using software that's not optimized for Intel (via the transparent "Rosetta" emulation), a G5 tower can actually be faster overall.
Drives
The four drives are SATA, and can be easily added and removed - but not while the computer is turned on... these drives are not hot-pluggable, or hot swap-able. The unit can come with open bays with the "sled" or mounting bracket included and empty. As you need to you can add your own SATA drives. Just mount your new drive into the supplied bracket. The drive carrier in the Mac Pro is a simple piece of aluminum that fastens to any standard SATA drive with four screws on the bottom of the drive and allows the drives SATA and power connectors to mate directly with a small backplane.
RAM
The Mac Pro was the first Mac to use FB-DIMM (Fully-Buffered DIMM) memory. FB memory offers significant performance gains over standard DIMM memory, further contributing to the overall performance of the Mac Pro.
When adding memory to the Mac Pro, DIMMs must be installed in pairs of equal size and speed, from the same manufacturer. The Mac Pro is expandable to an officially supported maximum of 16GB of memory.
PCI-Express Slots
The 4 PCI-Express expansion slots are numbered from bottom to top. Slot #1 is double-wide and support high-powered, double-wide graphics cards without sacrificing multiple PCI slots. (Recall on the Power Mac G5, a double-wide card installed in Slot #1 blocked access to Slot #2.) On the Mac Pro, PCI Express Slots #2, #3, and #4 are available for single-width PCI Express expansion cards. There is a utility called the Expansion Slot manager that allows monitoring of these slots.

- Four PCIe Expansion slots (one used by a video card)
- Four 3.5" hard drive bays for Serial ATA drives
- Airport Extreme and Bluetooth slots
- Ethernet: Two 10/100/1000 Base T ports
