Note: These units currently have AppleCare coverage listed within Apple's system through approximately June of 2010. The 13" MacBook was introduced to replace the iBook and 12" PowerBook models. If you're using OS X exclusively, a certified pre-owned MacBook (also known as a used MacBook or reseller refurbished MacBook elsewhere) is a good way to go. If you still need OS 9 (or prefer a built-in modem), then the iBooks and PowerBooks are worthy machines.

Since chip makers are having a difficult time increasing the speed of their chips, they are building additional "cores" into them, allowing for greater speed. The MacBooks come with two cores, with the difference between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo being a larger L2 cache and other technologies that enhance the speed (not something that you'll notice in most applications a great deal, however). Otherwise, the models are all very similar, with similar battery life, networking (with some slight upgradeability on the later models), Magsafe power connectors, glossy screens, scrolling trackpads, and integrated iSight video cameras. They are also available in either black or white; Apple charges a premium for the black screen on new models that is largely eliminated on pre-owned MacBook prices.
