Personal Archiving & Back-up

Did you know that the CD & DVD media burned by your computer might not last much longer than a couple of years?

Results will vary, but the perception that burning an optical disc will give you a permanent back-up can result in heartbreak in the future. Magnetic tape is another option, with manufacturers claiming a 30-year life span, but of course that’s in optimum conditions, and backing up to tape is not often very practical for individual users.

Ultimately, the safest way to store your precious data is to back it up to a hard drive, and if it's really precious, back it up to two separate devices. On top of that, you should do a complete back-up of your entire drive to an external drive every so often, and place that drive in a location other than where your computer is… because disasters and fires happen.

Nowadays, more and more people are taking digital photos and storing them in applications like iPhoto, Aperture and Adobe Lightroom. If disaster strikes and those photos disappear, what would it be worth to you to get them back? Chances are the answer to that is far less than most of the products listed on this page. With Apple's Time Machine, back-ups have never been easier. Don’t get lulled to sleep because things have worked so well for so long, or because you've never experienced a catastrophic crash.

Smart I.T. people will tell you: "It’s not a matter of if, but when."
