Do the new iMacs have FireWire ports?
Monday, May 11, 2009 / Hardware
The descriptions of the current model iMacs don’t mention firewire. Do they have firewire connections?
Despite Apple’s most recent cut of FireWire as an included port in the Unibody MacBook line, FireWire is still considered a standard port on iMacs. The new iMacs even have a FireWire 800 port in addition to the FireWire 400 port. Currently it is only the MacBook and MacBook Air that are missing FireWire ports of any speed.
The ports look like this:
Hope that helps,
Jacob

I see on your photo 9 ports. I know that four of these ports are USB and not firewire. I have just purchased an A to D converter with a 6 pin firewire cable. That cable does not fit into any of these ports. I have also purchased a firewire 6 pin to 4 pin cable. None of these fit into the ports on the back of the imac. So could you explain which ports on the back of the mac seen in your photo do you think are firewire???
Thanks.

Same here. I bought a 6/4 pin cable and was able to use it on my G4 iMac, but nothing I have fits into my new iMac. I need something that transfer files from my old to new computer. Also, one I can use with my video camera. Any suggestions?

The iMac pictured above has only one FireWire port: the 3rd from the right (the symbol over it looks like a ‘Y’) which is FireWire 800. It takes a 9-pin rectangular connector. Here is a link to what it looks like: http://firewirestuff.com/images/050761031705_15.gif
Cables are available in various combinations of 9-pin FW800 and 6- and 4-pin FW400. My camera is a 4-pin FW400. The older desktop Macs are 6-pin FW400.
Hope this helps!
